Poised Public Speaking & The Art of Persuasive Storytelling

Learning Objectives:
  • Overcome public speaking nervousness using diaphragmatic breathing and power posture.
  • Structure any persuasive presentation using the Hook-Story-Offer-Action (HSOA) framework.
  • Deliver oral presentations with vocal variety, confident eye contact, and authentic resonance.

1. Introduction & Context

The greatest ideas in history changed the world only because someone had the courage and skill to stand up, speak clearly, and move people’s hearts and minds.

2. Core Principles & Explanation

Public speaking is not an innate genetic gift; it is a learned physical and psychological craft. Stage fright is simply excess adrenaline. By taking three deep belly breaths and planting your feet firmly on the ground, you turn nervous energy into focused enthusiasm. Structure your speech into four clear pillars: (1) The Hook: A startling question or story that immediately captures attention. (2) The Core Message: Two or three clear, well-supported arguments. (3) The Emotional Story: A relatable human experience that makes listeners care. (4) The Call to Action: Exactly what you want your audience to think, feel, or do next.

Real-Life Nigerian Examples:
  • •Delivering your manifesto speech during the school prefect elections: Instead of just saying "Vote for me, I will be a good Head Boy", share a specific story of how you helped clean the library during the rain, proving your service commitment.
  • •Presenting a science project at a youth STEM fair in Kaduna: Starting with a passionate demonstration of local solar energy rather than reading dry bullet points off paper.
Hands-on Activity

3. Interactive Decision Challenge

You are giving a 2-minute speech on why your school compound should implement plastic recycling bins. How should you open your speech to capture maximum attention?

4. Knowledge & Concept Check

Question 1: What is the most effective way to calm physical stage fright before stepping on stage?

5. Real-World Application Challenge

Record a 90-second voice note or video of yourself explaining your favorite hobby or book using a Hook, Story, and Call to Action. Review it for vocal clarity and energy.

Lesson Summary:

Clear speech is leadership in action. When you organize your thoughts logically and speak with genuine conviction, you inspire others to action.
