The Tortoise and the Golden Mango

By Nigerian Oral Tradition • 220 words • Est. 3 mins

Once upon a time in a beautiful village near the green hills of Benue, there lived a clever tortoise named Ijapa. During the dry season, fruit was hard to find. One afternoon, while walking along the riverbank, Ijapa discovered a sparkling tree with only ONE golden mango hanging high up in the branches! "Aha!" whispered Ijapa with greedy eyes. "I will eat this all by myself and tell nobody!" He stretched his tiny legs and shook the trunk. The golden mango tumbled down into the soft grass. But just as he opened his mouth, a little hungry bush baby hopped out from behind the leaves, crying softly for food. Ijapa stopped. He looked at his full belly, then at the little crying bush baby. In his heart, Ijapa remembered the golden rule of elders: Sharing brings joy, but greed brings sadness. Ijapa smiled, split the juicy golden mango into two halves, and gave the sweeter half to the baby. Suddenly, the magical tree blossomed with fifty fresh mangoes for the whole village!
Core Educational & Moral Takeaway:Sharing with others multiplies your happiness. Greed leaves you alone, but kindness brings abundance!
