Effective AI Prompting & Fact-Checking Hallucinations

Learning Objectives:
  • Craft structured AI prompts using the CREATE framework (Context, Role, Explicit instructions, Ask, Tone, Examples).
  • Identify AI hallucinations, unsupported assertions, and factual inconsistencies.
  • Apply primary source verification techniques to validate all AI-generated academic claims.

1. Introduction & Context

Artificial Intelligence is like a brilliant research assistant that has read billions of books—but has no real consciousness, can make confident mistakes, and needs clear instructions to deliver high-quality work.

2. Core Principles & Explanation

Generative AI does not "know" truths; it predicts the most statistically likely sequence of words based on patterns in its training data. When an AI produces incorrect or fabricated information with complete confidence, this is called a hallucination. To get the best out of AI: (1) Use Structured Prompting: Give the AI a clear role, specify the target grade level, outline the exact format required, and provide boundaries. (2) Never Blindly Trust: Always verify dates, formulas, historical claims, and scientific quotes against authoritative textbooks, curriculum standards, or accredited academic sources.

Real-Life Nigerian Examples:
  • •If you ask an AI: "Who was the first civilian President of Nigeria?", it should state Alhaji Shehu Shagari (1979). If the AI claims Nnamdi Azikiwe was executive civilian president in 1979, an educated student cross-checks their Civic Education textbook to catch the historical mistake.
  • •A student preparing a coding script for a school website in Yaba uses AI to generate an initial JavaScript function, but tests every line in the browser console to identify bugs before submitting.
Hands-on Activity

3. Interactive Decision Challenge

Which prompt will yield the most reliable, pedagogically sound explanation of photosynthesis for a JSS 1 Basic Science student?

4. Knowledge & Concept Check

Question 1: What is an "AI hallucination"?

5. Real-World Application Challenge

Test this verification protocol: Take any AI response on a historical or scientific topic, find two independent authoritative textbooks or encyclopedias, and highlight any discrepancy.

Lesson Summary:

AI is a powerful amplifier of human intellect, but human judgment remains the ultimate captain. By pairing high-precision prompting with skeptical verification, you master the digital frontier.
