The Fundamental Laws of Indices ⚡
### Index notation represents repeated multiplication:
For any non-zero base $a$:
1. **Multiplication Law**: $a^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}$
2. **Division Law**: $a^m \div a^n = a^{m-n}$
3. **Power of a Power**: $(a^m)^n = a^{mn}$
4. **Zero Index**: $a^0 = 1 \quad (a \neq 0)$
5. **Negative Index**: $a^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n}$
6. **Fractional Index**: $a^{1/n} = \sqrt[n]{a} \quad \text{and} \quad a^{m/n} = (\sqrt[n]{a})^m$
Core Takeaway: When multiplying same bases, add powers. When dividing, subtract powers. Negative power means reciprocal.
