Subatomic Particles & Isotopic Notation

### Representation of an Atom: $$_Z^A X$$ * **$A$ (Mass Number)** = Protons + Neutrons * **$Z$ (Atomic Number)** = Protons (identifies the element) * **Neutrons ($n$)** = $A - Z$ #### Isotopy: Phenomenon whereby atoms of the same element have the same atomic number $Z$ but different mass numbers $A$ due to difference in number of neutrons. * *Example*: Chlorine exists as $^{35}_{17}\text{Cl}$ ($75\%$) and $^{37}_{17}\text{Cl}$ ($25\%$). $$A_r = \frac{(35 \times 75) + (37 \times 25)}{100} = 35.5$$
Core Takeaway: Isotopes possess identical chemical properties because they have identical electron configurations.
