Building Blocks of Numbers: Prime Numbers

### What is a Prime Number? A **prime number** is a whole number greater than 1 that has **only two factors**: 1 and itself. Examples of primes: $2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23...$ * Note: **2** is the ONLY even prime number! * Note: **1** is NOT a prime number (it only has one factor). Any number that has more than two factors is called a **composite number** (e.g., 4, 6, 8, 9, 12).
Core Takeaway: Primes are like the chemical elements of arithmetic. Every number can be built by multiplying primes together.
